Signature from the opera singer on a photograph (5½x3½) dramatically picturing him as an image of the devil
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Samuel Ramey", in black felt tip, Color 5½x3½. Samuel Ramey (b. 1942) is a basso cantante opera singer with a versatile voice. Ramey is known his "devil" roles in Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele, Gounod's Faust and Hector Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust, which he showcases in his A Date with the Devil concerts. He began his operatic career while at Kansas State University, when a friend suggested he sing for Central City Opera in Denver, Colorado during their summer program, where he sang in two choruses. He made his professional debut in 1973 as Zuniga in a New York City Opera production of Bizet's Carmen, but stardom eluded him until a 1980 performance of Rossini's Semirande in Aix-en-Provence. He debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy as Figaro in Mozart's The Barber of Sevillle the next year and at the New York Metropolitan Opera in Handel's Rinaldo. Corners and edges slightly worn. Bottom edge creased. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
