Check signed "S. Remington". 6¾x2½. Dec. 21, 1854. Check no. 100 for $5, made out to James Reyes and drawn on Remington's account at the Ilion Bank in Ilion, New York. Samuel Remington (1819-1892) was the son of Eliphalet Remington II, the founder of Remington Arms. Samuel joined his father's company in 1845, when it was named E. Remington & Sons and became a partner in the company, securing contracts with the United States government. He lived in Europe from 1863 to 1877 to act as sales agent for the company there. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Samuel became France's purchasing agent for its arms and ammunition in the United States. Lightly toned, soiled, stained and bowed. Handwriting, but not signature, is lightly smeared but legible. Normal cancellation cut, which touches handwriting but not signature. Random ink stains. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
