SAMUEL WYLLYS, JAMES CHURCH and JOHN CHENWARD
Samuel Wyllys, John Church and John Chenward, members of Connecticut's Committee of the Pay Table during the American Revolutionary War, signed this document in 1779 to someone 500 pounds.
Manuscript document signed "John Chenward", and "James Church" as "Comtee" and "Sam. Wyllys Auditor". 2 pages, 7¾x6¼, 1 sheet, front and verso with docket on page 2. March 4, 1779. Church and Chenward signed this document to pay the Derby Committee of Supplies 771 pounds and nine pence. Chenward and Church served on Connecticut's Committee of the Pay Table during the American Revolutionary War and were two of the five men who supervised Connecticut's war expenditures. The Pay-Table's members were rotated. WYLLYS (1739-1823) was a colonel who led a regiment in the siege of Boston during the American Revolutionary War. Fort Wyllys, at New York's West Point, in was named in his honor. He succeeded his father George Wyllys as Secretary of Connecticut from 1796 to 1809. George Wyllys had succeeded his father Hezekiah Wyllys as state Secretary, meaning that this position was held by three generations of the same family for a total of 98 years. CHENWARD (1733-1805) was a member of Connecticut's Pay-Table. Lightly toned. Auditor's signature crosses Church and Chenward's signatures. Pinholes in document, which touch Chenward's siganture. Light show-through from docket, which touches Chenward's signature. Light nicks at left and right edges. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfoled. Irregular edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
