SANDY KOUFAX
Color sports card showing Koufax shutting out the Minnesota Twins in Game Five of the 1965 World Series
Sports Card signed: "Sandy Koufax". Color, 3½x5. Ink signature on a card also bearing his facsimile signature. Career pitching record printed on verso. Sandy Koufax (b. 1935) holds the major league record for most consecutive years leading the league in Earned Run Average (1962-1966) during which time his record was 111-34 with 100 complete games, 33 of them shutouts. In 1963, the Dodgers' pitcher was the National League's Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner. He also won the Cy Young Award in 1965 and 1966. Traumatic arthritis ended his career after the 1966 season. In 1972, Koufax, at 36, became the youngest player ever elected to the Hall of Fame. This card shows Koufax delivering a pitch in Game Five of the 1965 World Series, in Dodger Stadium on October 11, 1965. Koufax won two games of this series, including the deciding Game Seven, and was not involved in the decision in another start. The original of this photo must have been snapped in innings five, six or seven, when the Dodgers held a 5-0 lead. The Dodgers won 7-0, Koufax holding the slugging Twins lineup to only four hits. Creased and worn on edges and corners. Lightly soiled and stained on verso.
