SARAH BERNHARDT
Signed autograph 5½x3½ note in French (1916), thanking an English woman for flowers
Autograph Note signed: "Sarah Bernhardt", 5½x3½ postcard. Bristol (England),
postmarked February 23, 1886. In French, loosely translated: She thanks the addressee for
the delightful violets which decorated her apartment. Addressed on verso (unknown hand) to
Madame Louise Nevill Perkins, Bristol. French stage star Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923),
born Henriette Rosine Bernard, who was noted for her remarkable voice, emotional acting
and unconventional personal life, began her career in 1862 in comic theater and burlesque,
and by the 1870s, she was appearing on stages all over Europe. Bernhardt later made her
film debut in Hamlet's Duel (1900), and, although she said she detested the medium, made
another film, Tosca, in 1908. Although she was horrified when she saw the finished
production and demanded that the negative be destroyed, Bernhardt later appeared in La
Dame aux Camelia (1911) and Queen Elizabeth, the 1912 film that provided the revenue to
enable Adolph Zukor to establish Paramount Studios. Bernhardt's eccentricities - she slept in
a coffin to prepare for tragic roles and kept a champagne-sipping alligator - anticipated later
generations of celebrity stars. Lightly toned around edges. Fine condition.
