SARAH BERNHARDT
Concluding her first US tour, she bids farewell to "the beautiful nation of America."
Autograph Note signed (in French): "Au revoir beau/pays d'Amerique/Sarah Bernhardt/1881" [Good bye to the beautiful nation of America.] 7x4. French stage star Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), born Henriette Rosine Bernard, who was noted for her remarkable voice, emotional acting and unconventional personal life, began her career in 1862 in comic theater and burlesque, and by the 1870s, she was appearing on stages all over Europe. Bernhardt later made her film debut in Hamlet's Duel (1900), and, although she said she detested the medium, made another film, Tosca, in 1908. Although she was horrified when she saw the finished production and demanded that the negative be destroyed, Bernhardt later appeared in La Dame aux Camelia (1911) and Queen Elizabeth, the 1912 film that provided the revenue to enable Adolph Zukor to establish Paramount Studios. Bernhardt made her first theatrical tour of the US from October 1880 to May 1881. Her acting, but also her eccentric personality, fascinated Americans. (She slept in a coffin to prepare for dramatic roles, and owned a champagne-sipping alligator.). This first US visit has been the subject of entire books reporting her impressions, and those of the America public. Lightly toned. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Multiple stains on verso (no show through). Otherwise fine condition.
