SARAH VAUGHAN. Typed DS: "Sarah Vaughan", 1p, 8½x11. No
place, 1980 January 18. In letter form to Pierre Cossette Productions,
Inc., Los Angeles, California, regarding an appearance on an unnamed TV
show. Titled: "Exhibit A" at lower margin. Begins:
"Concurrently herewith you are entering into an independent contractor's
agreement with [not filled in] (herein called 'Contractor') for my
services on the television program now entitled [not filled in] (herein
called 'the Program'). I acknowledge familiarity with the terms of your
agreement with the Contractor, insofar as it concerns my services, obligations
and grants of rights to you...." This contract likely refers to the 1980
two-hour television special, Uptown: A Tribute to the Apollo Theatre,
which was hosted by Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, Ben Vereen and Flip Wilson. In
addition to Vaughan, performers included Jack Albertson, Bunny Briggs, Cab
Calloway, Billy Eckstine, Gladys Knight, Nipsey Russell and Howard 'Sandman'
Sims. The following year, Vaughan appeared on another TV special, Live
From Studio 8H: 100 Years of America's Popular Music. Sarah Vaughan
(1924-1990) won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theatre in October 1942.
Shortly afterwards, in April 1943, she joined Earl Hines' big band as second
pianist and singer to Hines and Billy Eckstine. Early in 1944, Eckstine formed
his own bop-oriented big band and Vaughan joined him a few months later, making
her first recording with his orchestra on December 31st. She left Eckstine after
about a year and, after 1946, she worked only as a soloist, sometimes
accompanied by symphony orchestras. She won the 1982 Grammy Award for Jazz
Female Vocal for Gershwin Live! Lightly creased. Staple holes at
upper left corner, 2 file holes at upper blank margin. White out with correction
for 3899. Staple holes evident in second line of address. Fine
condition.
