SARAH VAUGHAN
Black and white publicity photograph of Sarah Vaughn in front of a microphone.
Photograph Mount signed: "All the best Sarah/Vaughan". B/w, matted to 7¼x9½ overall, image 6x8 (3 surfaces). Signed on inside. Sarah Vaughan (1924-1990) won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theatre in October 1942. Shortly afterwards, in April 1943, she joined Earl Hines' big band as second pianist and singer to Hines and Billy Eckstine. Early in 1944, Eckstine formed his own bop-oriented big band and Vaughan joined him a few months later, making her first recording with his orchestra on December 31st. She left Eckstine after about a year and, after 1946, she worked only as a soloist, sometimes accompanied by symphony orchestras. She won the 1982 Grammy Award for Jazz Female Vocal for Gershwin Live! Vaughan deserves to be ranked with Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holiday among the great female jazz singers of the 20th century. Not examined outside matting. Minor surface scratches. Otherwise, apparently fine condition. Matted, not in Gallery of History style. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity. "As is" matting purchase.
