SCHUYLER CHAPIN
Copy of Musical Chairs: A Life in the Arts by Schuyler Chapin, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, signed by Schuyler in 1978 in blue ink on the fly leaf
Inscribed book signed "For Herbert Axelrod/A fair exchange!/Best,/Schuyler Chapin/1/10/78" in blue ink on fly leaf. 488 pages with 16 pages of b/w photos, 9¼x9¼x1½. Copy of Musical Chairs: A Life in the Arts by Schuyler Chapin. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York. ©1977 Schuyler Chapin. Hardcover with dustcover. Chapin (1923-2009, born in New York City) never graduated from high school, but still held many significant jobs and posts in the New York City music and arts scene, including Lincoln Center's vice president of programming (1964-9), where he helped to create the Mostly Mozart series; general manager of the Metropolitan Opera (1972-4) and cultural commissioner of New York City (1994-2001). Not an artist himself, Chapin preferred to work in the background cheerleading for artists and worked with Igor Stravinsky, Glenn Gould, Vladimir Horowitz and Leonard Bernstein, among others. Lightly toned. 3 photos cut out of book. Dustcover is lightly scratched, scuffed and creased with light tears at top and bottom edges and adhesive residue near top edge tackhead-sized hole near bottom left corner of front cover. Top right corner of front cover and top and bottom edge of spine are rounded. Otherwise in fine condition.
