SCHUYLER OTIS BLAND
Writing on his letterhead as Chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, to a former Congressional colleague.
Typed Letter signed: "S O Bland" as US Representative, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D. C., 1944 June 12. On his letterhead as Chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee to Roy G. Fitzgerald, Dayton, Ohio. In full: "I received your letter of June 3rd and enjoyed it very much. There is nothing I would enjoy more than to be with you and to see your collection. I am in no way related to General Phillip Schuyler or James Otis. However I think that my parents admired their careers. I enjoyed very much the verse appended to your letter, but more than that, I would enjoy seeing you. If you should come to Washington at any time, please do not hesitate to call on me. Yours very sincerely". Virginia Democrat Schuyler Otis Bland (1872-1950) served sixteen terms in Congress (1918-1950), usually elected with unopposed or with 80-90% of the vote. Only ten Members have served longer than did Bland. As Chair of the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, he promoted fisheries conservation and preservation of a US merchant fleet. The library at the US Merchant Marine Academy is named for him. The letter's recipient, Roy G. Fitzgerald was a former Member of Congress (1921-1931). Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Small, blue stain on right margin. Edges slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
