SCOTT CARPENTER. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Scott Carpenter", 6½x3½. Space Cover postmarked Patrick Air Force Base, FL, October 2, 1961. Rubber-stamped Atlas rocket launch cachet. Scott Carpenter was one of America's original seven Project Mercury astronauts. He was the fourth American in space, the second to orbit, orbiting the Earth three times aboard Aurora 7 on May 24, 1962. The Mercury spacecraft was launched by an Atlas-D rocket. Carpenter later became an aquanaut, exploring the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Address notes lower right corner (unknown hand). Glue remnants on verso show through at blank areas, touching stamped cachet. Fine condition.
