SEÑOR WENCES - SELF-CARICATURE SIGNED - HFSID 209267
Sale Price $288.00
SEÑOR WENCES. Self-caricature signed: "Señor Wences" on verso. He has made a black ink drawing, shaded with red and green pencils, apparently a parody of his juggling act. Signature on verso is within an ornate, printed frame. Below drawing is a pencil caption of his name (unknown hand). Spanish-born ventriloquist Wenceslao Moreno (1896-1999), who was known as Senor Weñces, had found fame as a matador before he gained popularity in the U.S. after frequent appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. His famous characters included Johnny, a child-like face drawn on Weñces' hand and then placed atop a headless doll, and Pedro, a disembodied head in a box, who would utter Weñces' signature line, "s'alright". His act included juggling and plate twirling - complete with heckling from Johnny and Pedro. Fine condition.
