SELENA ROYLE
Her handwritten response on personal note paper, to a critical letter. A rare signature!
Autograph Letter signed: "Selena Royle". 2 pages (front and verso), 6x4. New York City, undated. On personally monogrammed note paper to "Dear Mrs. Gordon". In full: "34 E. 27 ST NYC Dear Mrs. Gordon- Here is the note: I have read Miss Spencer's letter with a great deal of interest and always wanted to know 'the worst'. Can she tell from my handwriting how badly I spell or is that obvious from the letter? Thank you and extend my thanks to Miss Spencer. Sincerely". Selena Royle (1904-1983), the daughter of playwright Edwin Milton Royle (The Squaw Man), debuted as Guinevere in one of her father's plays, despite her parents unhappiness with her choice of a theatrical career. Moving to films in the 1940s, she specialized in warm, kind, character roles. She played the mother of The Fighting Sullivans in that wartime drama (1944), and the mother of Elizabeth Taylor in The Courage of Lassie (1946). She starred as Hilda Hope, M.D. and Kate Hopkins in popular radio serials. During World War II, she played a key role in establishing New York's Stage Door Canteen for service men and women. Her career faltered in the 1950s when she was falsely accused of communist sympathies, even though she successfully sued the American Legion for defamation of character. She moved to Mexico with her second husband, actor Georges Renavent, and wrote books on Mexico and Mexican cooking. Multiple mailing folds. Creased. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
