Autograph Letter signed: "John J. Ingalls". 1p. 6x8¼. Tucson, Arizona, 1900 May 18, written on the back of two blank checks from Exchange National Bank, Atchison, Kansas. To: Mr. Van Cleve. In full: "My Dear Sir: Since Oct. I have been in N. Mx., Tx. and here, for relief from throat trouble resulting from the grip last year. On acct. of the uncertainty of the recovery of my voice at present I have concluded not to make any engagements for the platform the coming season. Thanks for your obliging letter Yours-". Attorney John J. Ingalls (1833-1900) settled in Kansas in 1860 and began working to make Kansas a free state. He served as a judge advocate in the Kansas militia during the Civil War and as Republican Senator from Kansas from 1873-1891. From February 25, 1887 to February 19, 1891, he was President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks had died on November 25, 1885, so from February 25, 1887 until March 4, 1889, when Levi P. Morton was sworn in as Vice President, Ingalls was the presiding officer of the Senate and used the Vice President's Chamber as his office. Ingalls and his wife had 11 children. Lightly soiled and toned. Edges are perforated. 1¼x½ irregular piece missing from right edge. Fold creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
