and a transmittal letter from his Senate office
Typed Letter Signed: "Leverett Saltonstall" as US Senator, 3¼x2¼ card, affixed to an 8½x11
page which also bears a transmittal envelope with Saltonstall's stamped frank, and - on verso -
a transmittal letter from his Senate office dated August 3, 1945. LEVERETT
SALTONSTALL (1892-1979) served as Governor of Massachusetts (1939-1945), was U.S.
Senator from 1945-1967, serving as Republican Whip from 1949-1957. A member of the
Saltonstall family that came over on the Mayflower to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony,
and which included a judge at the Salem Witch Trials, he was also the tenth direct descent to
graduate from Harvard. He was the great-grandson of Leverette Saltonstall (1783-1845),
US Representative from Massachusetts (1817-1819, 1831-1832). From the collection of
Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the
China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO
of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product
conglomerate. Paper clip rusting and imprint. Otherwise, fine condition.
