SENATOR PAUL FANNIN
signing as Senator he responds to a question from an elementary school
principal
Typed Letter Signed: "Paul Fannin". 1p. 8x10½ Senate Committee on
Finance letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1971 February 24. To:Jack
F. Dodds, Principal, Riley Elementary School Lincoln, Nebraska. In full:
"Dear Mr. Dodds: It would take a book for me to tell you and the students
of Riley Elementary School what my country means to me. If I were to select one
word to sum up what my country means to me, I think I might choose the word
"opportunity". In America a person is provided the opportunity to make of
himself whatever he wishes with only physical or mental capacity as the limiting
factors. Few nations in the world offer so much hope to so many people. With all
best wishes, Sincerely," Paul Fannin (1907-2002) was first elected to
public office in 1958 and served as the Republican Governor of Arizona from
1959-1965. Elected to the U.S. Senate (replacing Barry Goldwater when
he ran for the Presidency) he served from 1965-1977. A hard-line conservative,
he voted against the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972 and retired after
serving two terms. Normal mailing creases. Fine condition.
