SENATOR PAUL FANNIN
Signing as Senator, regarding federal funds to assist with desegregation in a Tempe, Arizona school
Typed Letter Signed: "Paul Fannin". 1p. 8x10½, Senate Committee on Finance letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1973 April 23. To:Dr. Herman Goldberg, Bureau of Equal Educational Opportunity, Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Dr. Goldberg: This refers to an application for federal funds to assist in planning for desegregation, submitted by Tempe School District Number 3, of Tempe Arizona. As you may know, this district recently received notice of non-compliance under Title VI of the civil Rights Act of 1964. In their effort to remedy this situation with all possible speed, federal financing would certainly be of great assistance in defraying their planning costs and boosting this district to an equal educational status. Your favorable consideration would aid District No. 3 in meeting the Federally determined guidelines. I appreciate your attention in this matter and would like to be informed of this request's position in your Bureau, at your convenience. With kindest regards. Sincerely," Paul Fannin (1907-2002) was first elected to public office in 1958 and served as the Republican Governor of Arizona from 1959-1965. Elected to the U.S. Senate (replacing Barry Goldwater when he ran for the Presidency) he served from 1965-1977. A hard-line conservative, he voted against the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972 and retired after serving two terms. Two sets of staple holes at top left corner. Normal mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
