SERGEANT YORK MOVIE CAST
Helmet worn by Gary Cooper in his Academy Award-winning role as Sergeant Alvin C. York.
Helmet, unsigned. Metal, 11¼x12¼-inch. Lightly worn and stained. Original strap is missing a length of string. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity giving the provenance of the helmet. In part: "This helmet was worn by Gary Cooper in the movie 'SARGEANT (sic) YORK'. He wore three different helmets and this helmet was worn when he was in training camp before going overseas." Horizontal and vertical folds through the center. Fine condition. With a photograph of Cooper in film, unsigned. B/w with brown hue, 9¾x8 overall, image 9¼x7 (one surface). Captioned at lower margin: "Gary Cooper 'Sergeant York'". Slightly creased. Fine condition. Gary Cooper (1901-1961), born Frank James Cooper, won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Sergeant Alvin C. York, the most decorated U.S. soldier of WWI. York, a former conscientious objector, had handpicked Cooper to play him as a condition of selling the movie rights to his story (the other two conditions were that there be no "phony heroics" in the film and that Mrs. York not be played by a Hollywood "glamour girl"). The 1941 WWI drama, directed by Howard Hawks, also starred Joan Leslie as Grace Williams, Ward Bond as Ike Botkin (nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Noah Beery, Jr. as Buck Lipscomb and June Lockhart as Rosie York. Sergeant York, one of the top grossing films of 1941, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (winning for Best Actor and Best Editing). Three items.
