Gary Cooper (1901-1961), born Frank James Cooper, won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Sergeant Alvin C. York, the most decorated U.S. soldier of WWI. York, a former conscientious objector, had handpicked Cooper to play him as a condition of selling the movie rights to his story (the other two conditions were that there be no "phony heroics" in the film and that Mrs. York not be played by a Hollywood "glamour girl"). The 1941 WWI drama, directed by Howard Hawks, also starred Joan Leslie as Grace Williams, Ward Bond as Ike Botkin (nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Noah Beery, Jr. as Buck Lipscomb and June Lockhart as Rosie York. Sergeant York, one of the top grossing films of 1941, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (winning for Best Actor and Best Editing). Three items.
