SERGIO FRANCHI
Signature in blue ink from the Italian vocalist and actor
Signature: "Sergio Franchi", in blue ink, 4¾x3¾. Born in
Cremona, Italy, Sergio Franchi (1926-1990) moved with his family
to South Africa in 1952. An electrical engineer by education, he studied voice
with the hope of becoming a professional singer. In 1954, he was "discovered"
and signed to tour South Africa in LaTraviata, Madama,
Butterfly, Carmen, etc. He returned to Italy and toured
Europe, ended up on a British television program, Sunday Night at the
Palladium (1962) and was off to the US. Recording, performing at clubs
(The Coconut Grove), and on television (The Ed Sullivan Show, The
Red Skelton Show), Franchi was a sensation. Sold-out concerts and
appearances on Broadway gave way to movies in 1969 when he stared with Anthony
Quinn in The Secret of Santa Vittoria. That same year, he signed a
2 year contact at the Flamingo Room in Las Vegas and became an American citizen
in 1972. Top edge frayed. Slightly toned. Slight surface creases. Fine
condition.
