Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Resp'y/Seth Low/Dec. 11.
1896", 4¼x2½ card. Seth Low (1850-1916) was Mayor of the city of
Brooklyn from 1882-1886. His support of Democrat Grover Cleveland in 1884
angered his fellow Republicans and cost Low a third term. After serving as
President of Columbia University (1889-1901), he was elected Mayor of
New York City as Fusion candidate against Tammany Hall (1902-1903). (Mark
Twain actively stumped for his election.) As Mayor he reformed the police and
education departments, reorganized the city finances, compelled the
electrification of the New York Central Railroad within the city and attacked
the continued existence of unsanitary tenements. In his later years he was
Chairman of the Tuskegee Institute and President of the National Civic
Federation. His skill at consensus building was even demonstrated at his
funeral, during which financier J. P. Morgan and AFL founder Samuel Gompers were
honorary pallbearers. Fine condition.
