SETH THOMAS. Manuscript DS: "Seth Thomas" and 91 others, 2p, 7¾x12½, front
and verso. Plymouth, Connecticut, 1823 September 27. In part: "Whereas an application
has been made and is now pending before the County Court for the County of Litchfield
praying for the discontinuance of a highway in Plymouth laid out & established
September County Court 1812…We the subscribers are of opinion that said highway is
wholly unnecessary for public use and wish the same to be discontinued." Seth Thomas
has clearly signed on the second page, the fifth signature in the first column. Thomas
was associated with Eli Terry and Silas Hoadley in the firm of Terry, Thomas & Hoadley, which
manufactured clocks by mass production methods (1807). He founded his first clock factory
at Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut in 1812. The Seth Thomas Clock Co. was formed in
1853. After his death in 1859, Plymouth Hollow, a mile east of Plymouth, was renamed
Thomaston in his honor. Fragile. Folds show separations, affecting some signatures but not
Thomas'. 2" tear at lower left crease. Light tape repairs at mid-horizontal fold at edges. Lightly
stained. Lightly soiled, just touching the "S" and "t" of Seth.
