SHEIKH SHAMS ALDEIN AL FASSI
Controversial Beverly Hills resident; involved in lawsuit touching Saudi royal family.
Telegram, unsigned, 1 page, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1978 June 12. Western Union Mailgram to actress/comedienne Phyllis Diller, Los Angeles, California. In full: "It would be a great pleasure to have your company at a reception at our home on Friday June 16th from 6PM to 9PM. I am looking forward to meeting you and my neighbors. Sincerely". Sheikh al-Fassi, who was born in Morocco, moved to Saudi Arabia when he was 10 and became a distant member of the royal family when his sister married a Saudi prince. In 1975 he and his wife Dena moved to Los Angeles, where they bought a lavish mansion on Sunset Boulevard which brought him local notoriety when he painted it a vivid shade of green and pushed the limits of art and pornography with his garden statuary. After al-Fassi separated from his wife in 1983, a protracted legal battle ensued, going all the way to the Supreme Court. Dena al-Fassi's suit contends that the Saudi Royal family is responsible for money owed under her separation agreement, the value of which with accrued interest had grown to $223 million by 2001. In 2003 a US judge upheld Dena's claim, and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the decision. Legal maneuvering continued, however. Fine condition.
