SHEILA STEPHENS MacRAE
The wife of Gordon MacRae signs and endorses a $79.62 check to Lakeside Pharmacy
Check signed: "Sheila Stephens MacRae", in black ink, 6x3¼. Stamped endorsement on verso.
August 22, 1952. Check no. 1780, drawn on the account of Gordon MacRae at the Bank of
America, Hollywood, California. Payable to Lakeside Pharm for $79.62. English actress and
singer Sheila Stephens (1924-2014) met young Gordon MacRae in a regional theater
production in 1940, and they married the following year. Though not as well known as
husband Gordon, who is probably best remembered today for his role as Curly in the film
version of Oklahoma! (1955), Sheila was herself a fine singer. The MacRae's performed
together in a popular nightclub act and in stage productions, including Guys and Dolls.
(She took her role as Adelaide to Broadway in the musical's 1965 revival.) In 1966, Sheila
replaced Audrey Meadows in the role of Alice Kramden in "The Honeymooners"
segment of The Jackie Gleason Show, filmed in Florida. Gordon was still in Los Angeles,
and the marriage did not survive the separation. Gordon and Sheila MacRae had four children,
including future actresses Heather and Meredith MacRae, and son William Gordon MacRae.
Lower left-hand corner rounded. Right edge perforated. Stamped on verso (no show-through).
Otherwise, fine condition.
