SHEILA STEPHENS MacRAE
The wife of Gordon MacRae signs and endorses a $44.12 check to their young son, drawn on the account of their company, Kintail Enterprises.
Check signed and endorsed: "Sheila Stephens MacRae", 8¼x3. Endorsed on verso "Sheila Stephens MacRae" (for her 8-year old son). Los Angeles, California, 1956 March 23. Check #113, drawn on the account of Kintail Enterprises, Inc. at The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Los Angeles, payable to William Gordon MacRae for $44.12. Typed calculation of the payable sum in printed columns at left edge. English actress and singer Sheila Stephens (1924-2014) met young Gordon MacRae in a regional theater production in 1940, and they married the following year. Though not as well known as husband Gordon, best remembered today as Curly in the film version of Oklahoma! (1955), Sheila was herself a fine singer. The MacRae's performed together in a popular nightclub act and in stage productions, including Guys and Dolls. (She took her role as Adelaide to Broadway in the musical's 1965 revival.) In 1966, Sheila replaced Audrey Meadows in the role of Alice Kramden in "The Honeymooners" segment of The Jackie Gleason Show, filmed in Florida. Gordon was still in Los Angeles, and the marriage did not survive the separation. Gordon and Sheila MacRae had four children, including future actresses Heather and Meredith MacRae, and son William Gordon MacRae (b. 1948), to whom this check was written. Kintail Enterprises was a production company headed by Gordon MacRae. The year this check was signed, Kintail produced a holiday musical special for the Lux Video Theatre. Both of the MacRae's soon remarried, Sheila to Jackie Gleason's producer, Ronald Wayne. Still known professionally as Sheila MacRae, she co-hosted a TV show with daughters Heather and Meredith in 1971. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
