SHELDON LEONARD
Sheldon Leonard signs a baseball on the sweet spot in black magic marker.
Baseball signed: "Sheldon Leonard/Executive producer/Dick Van Dyke Show", on sweet spot. Dunlop baseball. Sheldon Leonard (1907-1997), born Sheldon Leonard Bershad, had two successful careers: he was a radio, stage and Hollywood actor and later was the producer of such classic television shows as The Danny Thomas Show, The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., winning five Emmys for his producing/directing. Sheldon also spearheaded I Spy, the first TV action series featuring a Black star (Bill Cosby). Leonard, who made his film debut in Ouanga in 1936, usually played a mob boss, henchman and all-round tough guy after his 1939 role in Another Thin Man, but one of his most memorable roles was as Nick the bartender in the holiday classic, It's A Wonderful Life (1946) and he was also one of the "high rollers" in Guys and Dolls (1955). The versatile star was also a regular on radio's Jack Benny Program and The Martin and Lewis Show (1949-1953) before branching out into television as the director of Make Room For Daddy (1953-1964), which starred Danny Thomas, Leonard's future business partner and friend. Leonard also made guest appearances in a number of TV series, including two of his own, The Andy Griffith Show (1960, 1965) and I Spy (1965), as well as Sanford and Son (1976) and Cheers (1990), and he starred in the short-lived sitcom, Big Eddie (1975). Ink is hallowed but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
