Published script of Fiddler on the Roof, signed on the title page by lyricist Harnick and on the cast page by Arthur
Book signed: "Sheldon Harnick", "Bea Arthur", 120 pages, 5½x8¼, hard cover. Script of Fiddler on the Roof, by Joseph Stein and Sunbeam Music Corp., with listing of the original Broadway cast. Signed by Harnick on the title page, where he is credited with the lyrics; and by Arthur on the cast page, where she is listed in the role of Yente. Lyricist and sometime composer SHELDON HARNICK (b. 1924) is best known for his collaborations with composer Jerry Bock on hit musicals like She Loves Me and Fiorello! (which earned them a Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1960). Their most famous work was the one shown here, however, a smash hit on Broadway and in the feature film which followed. Harnick remained active in the new millennium, providing the lyrics for the stage production of The Phantom Tollbooth in 2007. BEATRICE "BEA" ARTHUR (1922-2009) began doing TV comedy in 1954 (The George Gobel Show, Caesar's Hour). After a hit guest starring appearance on All on the Family in 1971, Arthur got a sitcom of her own, Maude (1972-1978), for which she won an Emmy Award and was nominated for four Golden Globes. Later the co-star of The Golden Girls (1985-1992), Arthur had made her TV debut on Kraft Television Theatre in 1951. She has also appeared on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for her performance as Vera Charles in Mame (a role she reprised in the 1975 film, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination) and stealing the show as the matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. Edges and corners lightly worn and faded. Pages lightly toned. Random pencil notations throughout the book. Binding loose but intact.
