SHEILA KAYE-SMITH. TLS: "Sheila Kaye-Smith", ¼p, 8x10. St. Leonards on Sea [Essex, England], 1924 September 5. To Jas. Milne, Esq., The Caledonian Club, St. James's Square, London. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "Thank you very much for your letter of the 3rd instant, but I am sorry to say that I have been obliged to make a rule never to contribute to Symposia, as I find that doing so would take up too much of my time." Written the year after Kaye-Smith had published The End of the House of Alard, the novel that brought her greatest financial success. British author Sheila Kaye-Smith (1887-1956) published a number of novels reflecting life in her native Sussex, beginning with The Tramping Methodist, published in 1908 when the author was 21. Her 1916 novel, Sussex Gorse, brought considerable notice and is one of her best-known works. The other works of Kaye-Smith include Shepherds in Sackcloth (1930), Susan Spray (1931), The Happy Tree (1949) and Quartet in Heaven (1952), the autobiographical Three Ways Home and novels about children, including The Children's Summer and Selina is Older. Her 1922 novel, Joanna Godden, published two years before Kaye-Smith wrote this letter, was made into a feature film, The Loves of Joanna Godden, in 1947. Lightly creased with folds. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
