SHEPPARD STEVENS
The popular author of historical fiction thanks a reviewer for praising one of his books.
Autograph Letter signed: "Sheppard Stevens", 2 pages (integral leaf). St Louis, 1899 December 27. On black-bordered mourning paper to "My dear Miss Lazarus", in full: "Your note with the review of my book was forwarded to me at Little Rock where I had gone in response to a telegram telling me of my mother's illness. I am glad to say she is much better now. This and my hurried return to St Louis is the reason for my delay in sending you a word of thanks for the notice, in which, I assure you I was not in the least disappointed. Indeed I think you treated me most handsomely and I only hope that you may be able without violation of conscience to do as well by me on number three when it appears. With thanks and best wishes for a Happy New Year I am sincerely yours". American novelist Sheppard Stevens (1862-1909) wrote many popular volumes of historical fiction. In 1899, he Little, Brown & Co. of Boston published his novel The Sword of Justice, recounting the struggle between Spain and France for control of Florida. Among his other works were In the Eagle's Talon, "romance of the Louisiana Purchase", and I Am the King, a story of the Crusades. Some sources date the death of Stevens in 1902, but he had several books published after that date. "Miss Lazarus" was not fellow author Emma Lazarus; she had died in 1887. Edges and corners worn. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Adhesive residue on verso. Paper clip crease and stain on top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
