SHIRLEY BROOKS
Handwritten letter expressing strong support for a charity
Autograph Letter signed:
"Shirley Brooks", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7, Kent Terrace, 1863 March 24. To "S. S. Smith, Esq.", in full: "The claims of the charity, on behalf of which you pay me the compliment of asking me to add my name to the list of Stewards, are of a nature which make it a pleasant duty to reply with a willing assent. I hope to be in London on the 6th of May, in which case I shall certainly attend, for the sake of the cause, and for that of hearing it so eloquently pleaded as it will be by such a Chairman. In the meantime, I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient & faithful servant".. English journalist, novelist and playwright Claude William Shirley Brooks (1816-1874) wrote as Shirley Brooks, and - in Punch magazine - as "Epicurus Rotundus." After five years as journalist covering debates in the House of Commons, Brooks traveled to Russia and the Middle East, publishing an account of his observations there. His essays and short stories were carried in many respected British literary journals; his first novel, the popular Aspen Court, was published in 1853. His light comedic plays were also popular. In 1851, Brooks joined the staff of Punch magazine, becoming its editor from 1870 until his death. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Adhesive residue at edges on verso. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
