SHIRLEY BROOKS
Handwritten letter, promising to meet deadlines in the future
Autograph Letter signed: "S. B.", 1 page, 4½x7, London,
1864 October 24. On letterhead of "Once a Week" to "My dear Lucas",
in full: "You are quite right on both points, and shall see that I
hold you so by my rapid adherence in future to dates. That I explained to
Walford, for your special ear, that a most disagreeable family business, not
complete till today, had thrown me out of power this week, and I don't infer
from your note that this was told to you. I conclude that I had not sent in the
copy this week. [illegible closing]". English journalist, novelist and
playwright Claude William Shirley Brooks (1816-1874) wrote as Shirley
Brooks, and - in Punch magazine - as "Epicurus Rotundus." After five years as
journalist covering debates in the House of Commons, Brooks traveled to Russia
and the Middle East, publishing an account of his observations there. His essays
and short stories were carried in many respected British literary journals; his
first novel, the popular Aspen Court, was published in 1853. His light
comedic plays were also popular. In 1851, Brooks joined the staff of Punch
magazine, becoming its editor from 1870 until his death. This letter, pleading
family reasons for not meeting some deadline, was uncharacteristic of Brooks,
known for his hard work and long hours. Toned and worn. Multiple mailing folds.
Soiled at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
