Shirley Jones signs a typed letter with her married name to comedienne and
actress Phyllis Diller.
Typed Letter Signed: "Shirley Jones Ingels", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place,
no date, circa 1984. On stationery imprinted "Shirley Jones Ingels" to
comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. Form letter authentically signed in
ink. Begins: "Dear Friend". In full: "Oh how I wish The
City of Hope was not its name. How I wish our beloved City of Hope,
seventy-one dedicated years old, could fiinally be called The City of
CURE, The City of TRIUMPH, The City of CANCER GONE, of
NO MORE DIABETIS (sic), of ONLY HEALTHY HEARTS. And we will
live to see that day, Lord help us. But till then, we thank God for our
relentless army of doctors and technicians and unyielding humanists who will
never rest until they bury the insidious menace of catastrophic disease. I am
eminently proud to have been named The City of Hope's 'Woman of the Year' -
and I truly hope you will be able to join us on October 16th or 17th in the
International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel for our gala luncheon and
fashion show. The contribution is $35.00 The return is a legacy of Life.
Gratefully". Both Jones and Diller lent their time and talents to
philanthropic efforts. In the year she signed this letter, Jones appeared in the
feature film, Tank. Singer and actress SHIRLEY JONES (born in
1934) starred in the film versions of the hit musicals Oklahoma
(1955), Carousel (1956) and The Music Man (1962). She earned a
Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for playing, quite contrary to her
wholesome image, an angry prostitute in Elmer Gantry (1969). Jones
is best known to television audiences as Shirley Partridge, the matriarch on
the popular musical sitcom, The Partridge Family (1970-1974), whose
cast included her stepson, David Cassidy (in 2004, Jones hosted a reality
TV program to select a cast for a new Partridge Family pilot). Jones was
married to her first husband, Jack Cassidy, from 1956 until their divorce
in 1974; their sons, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan, all became entertainers. She has
been married to comedian/actor Marty Ingels since 1977, although the
couple has separated several times and divorce papers were once filed (but
withdrawn). Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012),
known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a
stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang",
and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big
break in March 1955 (at age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple
Onion club. A subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack
Paar launched her national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw
Diller in a Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would
appear in three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who
recorded her first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny
hausfrau" act to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she
also appeared on the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in
the Grass (1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong
Number! (1966), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the
Hams (1994), and she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life
(1998). By 2000, the comedienne, who had trained as a concert pianist before her
marriage (1939-1965) to Sherwood Anderson Diller, had appeared as a piano
soloist with 100 symphony orchestras across the U.S. Despite retiring from
nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make
films (Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and
occasionally appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th Heaven
(2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004). Lightly
creased with folds, light diagonal crease at the "S" of Shirley. Fine
condition.
