SHIRLEY JONES and MARTY INGELS
The couple signs a typed letter to Phyllis Diller asking her for donations
Typed Letter signed: "Shirley" by Jones and "& Marty!" by Ingels, 1p, 8½x11. Los Angeles,
California, 1992 April 22. On letterhead reading "But most of all...I Remember Mama" to
comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. To "Dear Miss Diller". Jones has written "Phyllis" in
purple across Diller. In full: "Mother's Day is so very special! It is, therefore, our pleasure to ask
you to join us in making this Mother's Day especially wonderful for more than 400 elderly
women who would otherwise spend 'their day' alone and forgotten. This is the fifth year the
Volunteers of America will be inviting ladies from senior centers throughout greater Los Angeles to
attend a luncheon in their honor at the Bonaventure Hotel...complete with corsages, Mother's
Day Cards and entertainment just for them. Truly, if you could see how the hearts of these
discarded souls come alive at this extraordinary tribute, this letter would be more than
unnecessary. We are hoping you will help the Volunteers continue this lovely tradition by
sponsoring one or more of the attending 'moms'. Your contribution of $200 per plate will be
doing so much more than providing a wonderful afternoon once a year. Proceeds from this
luncheon continue working all year round to enable Volunteers of America to prepare and
deliver more than 1,400 meals each day to homebound and frail seniors through VOA's
'Good Neighbor - Meals For the Elderly' Program. Volunteers of America has been quietly and
effectively serving our community for nearly 100 years. And they need your help today more than
ever. Please join us in bringing this gift of love to some very special women. If you can sponsor a
table of ten at $2,000, that would be wonderful. Your generous help will make May 10th the
happiest day of the year for these ladies and ensure many more elderly their hot nutritious meals
throughout the year. Sincerely". At lower margin, Ingels has drawn a line and written:
"Thanks for Caring" above the signatures. At lower left, Jones has written: "Happy/Mom's
Day, Phyllis!" Stamped illustration of the couple under "Sincerely". In 1967, Ingels was a
regular (he played Norman Krump) on The Pruitts of South Hampton (1966-1967),
which was also called The Phyllis Diller Show. Comedian and actor MARTY INGELS
(1936-2015), born Martin Ingerman, made his television debut in 1960 on Dan Raven. Two
years later he was starring opposite John Astin on the TV comedy, I'm Dickens, He's
Fenster (1962-1963). He also guest starred in a number of TV shows and lent his voice
talents to several animated series. Ingels, who made his film debut in Armored Command,
has been seen on the big screen in such features as The Horizontal Lieutenant (1962),
Wild and Wonderful (1964), The Busybody and A Guide for the Married Man (both
1967) and If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969). He has been married to his second
wife, singer and actress Shirley Jones, since November 13, 1977. Singer and actress
SHIRLEY JONES (b. 1934) starred in the film versions of the hit musicals Oklahoma
(1955), Carousel (1956) and The Music Man (1962). She earned a Best Supporting Actress
Academy Award for playing, quite contrary to her wholesome image, an angry prostitute in
Elmer Gantry (1969). Jones is best known to television audiences as Shirley Partridge, the
matriarch on the popular musical sitcom, The Partridge Family (1970-1974), whose cast
included her stepson, David Cassidy (in 2004, Jones hosted a reality TV program to select a
cast for a new Partridge Family pilot). Jones was married to her first husband, Jack Cassidy,
from 1956 until their divorce in 1974; their sons, Shaun, Patrick, and Ryan, all became
entertainers. Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012) was known for her outrageous
appearance, zany outfits, and distinctive laugh. Her stand-up act featured frequent
references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex appeal and
numerous plastic surgeries. She got her big break in March 1955 (at age 37), when she
debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A subsequent appearance on The Tonight
Show hosted by Jack Paar launched her national career, which got a big boost after Bob
Hope saw Diller in a Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would
appear in three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her first
comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act to nightclubs
and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on the big screen. Her
feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass (1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get
a Wrong Number! (1966), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994),
and she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). Despite retiring from
nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make films
(Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and occasionally appear on TV programs,
including two episodes of 7th Heaven (2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady
Show (2004).Lightly creased with folds, not at signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
