SHIRLEY JONES
Shirley Jones sends a typed note to Phyllis Diller to let her know that someone is singing her name.
Typed Note Signed: "SJ", 1p, 7x7½. Hollywood, California, no date. On sheet picturing Marty Ingels at lower right corner to comedienne and actress Phyllis Diller. No salutation. In full: "Just a crucial note to let you know that somebody is sending out beautiful - warm and lovely notes, and signing your name. The nerve! (Yes, it's going well. Maybe because, when it all hit the fan for me a few years back, I just didn't say die. And, agonizing as it was, I forced myself up to take another shot. I guess maybe I 'deserve' some good stuff, hmm?) Please come visit us". Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Staple holes at upper right blank edges. Fine condition. Accompanied by another sheet with imprinted photograph of Ingels and Jones at lower left, unsigned, 7x7½. A word balloon has been drawn around the typed words: "He sure goes on alot, doesn't he?" Singer and actress SHIRLEY JONES (born in 1934) starred in the film versions of the hit musicals Oklahoma (1955), Carousel (1956) and The Music Man (1962). She earned a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for playing, quite contrary to her wholesome image, an angry prostitute in Elmer Gantry (1969). Jones is best known to television audiences as Shirley Partridge, the matriarch on the popular musical sitcom, The Partridge Family (1970-1974), whose cast included her stepson, David Cassidy (in 2004, Jones hosted a reality TV program to select a cast for a new Partridge Family pilot). Jones was married to her first husband, Jack Cassidy, from 1956 until their divorce in 1974; their sons, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan, all became entertainers. She has been married to comedian/actor Marty Ingels since 1977, although the couple has separated several times and divorce papers were once filed (but withdrawn). Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012), known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big break in March 1955 (at age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar launched her national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw Diller in a Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would appear in three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass (1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994), and she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). Despite retiring from nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make films (Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and occasionally appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th Heaven (2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004). Lightly creased with folds. Staple holes at upper right. Fine condition. Two items.
