Tango/Hippodrome/Jan 8 - 1914". B/w, 3½x5½. Captioned in lower margin.
American actress and soprano Shirley Kellogg (b. 1888) starred in four
Broadway musicals between 1908 and 1912, and issued many early recordings for
Columbia. Her influence was greatest in Britain, however, where she did much to
popularize new music from across the Atlantic. In 1912, Kellogg starred in
Hullo Ragtime, with a script written by her husband, Albert de Courville.
The English musicians resisted playing in the ragtime style, some of them
declaring that it was "not music," but it proved a hit with London audiences.
Two years later, with Ethel Levey (George M. Cohan's wife) she appeared there in
Hullo Tango, as noted on this photo, popularizing the Argentinian dance
craze. Apparently, Kellogg also popularized another American innovation in
Britain: the motor scooter. Corners creased and worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
