First Day Cover signed: "Shirley/Knight", 6½x3½. FDC celebrating Christmas, four 8-cent
stamps affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., November 9, 1972, FIRST DAY OF
ISSUE. Shirley Knight (1936-2020) appeared headed for film stardom after she was
nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscars for The Dark at the Top of the Stairs
(1960) and Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). She preferred to pursue a stage career, with
considerable success, winning a Tony as Best Featured Actress in Kennedy's Children
(1976). Two decades later she earned a Tony nomination as Best Actress for The Young
Man from Atlanta (1997). Recently she has returned to film in mature roles, including
prominent parts in A House on the Hill (2001) and P.S. Your Cat is Dead! (2003). She was
married for nearly thirty years until his death (1998) to British playwright John Hopkins.
Their daughter is now a Broadway performer. Fine condition.
