5½x7 image of the singer and actress, who had seemed destined for major stardom
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Shirley Ross". Sepia, 5½x7. Captioned for Paramount Pictures. Singer and actress Shirley Ross (1913-1975) made her first recording at age 20, with Gus Arnheim's orchestra. She made her film debut in Manhattan Melodrama (1933), and in her first major role in Bing Crosby's Waikiki Wedding (1938). She sang duets with Bob Hope in two films: The Big Broadcast of 1938 and Thanks for the Memory, joining him in the first performance of what became Hope's signature song. Her only Broadway appearance was in the Rodgers and Hart musical Higher and Higher (1940); she recorded four songs from the show. For reasons that are unclear, given Ross's talent and screen presence, Paramount lost interest in Rose; her star did not ascend as did those of her lifelong friends Crosby and Hope. After some radio success in the mid-1940s, she retired early, and turned down the lead in the road tour of Guys and Dolls. Slightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
