SHURA CHERKASSKY and HANS RICHTER-HAASER Signatures of both classical pianists on reverse sides of an album leaf Signature: "Shura Cherkassky", on front and "Hans Richter Haaser/Jan 12th, 1967" on verso, both in black ink, 5¾x4. SHURA CHERKASSKY (1909-1985) was born in the Ukraine. The son of performing and teaching pianist Lydia Cherkassky, Shura - a Russian diminutive for Alexander - fled to the United States with his family after the Russian Revolution. A pianist acclaimed for his spontaneity (a trait not admired by all conductors), Cherkassy toured the world's great concert halls and made recordings of the works of many of the great classical composers. He loved the concert stage, and many of his most highly-regarded records were made in concert hall settings. His last recordings, a collection of Rachmaninoff pieces, were made just seven months before his death. German pianist HANS RICHTER-HAASER (1912-1980) toured world concert stages while recording the works of Beethoven, Brahms, and others. Remarkably, Richter-Haaser played no piano during World War II (1939-1946), yet he enjoyed his greatest success after returning to the stage following the war. Left edge frayed by removal from bound book. Otherwise, fine condition.
