Signature: "Sian/ Phillips" in purple felt tip, 5x3¾. Welsh actress Sian Phillips (b. 1933)
appeared in BBC productions in Wales and was a Welsh-language announcer for the
network before she made her London stage debut in 1957. The following year, she began
playing the title role in Ibsen's Hedda Gabler and Shaw's Saint Joan. Phillips won a
BAFTA for her portrayal of Livia, Augustus Caesar's villainous wife in I, Claudius (1972).
She also played the unfaithful wife of George Smiley (Alec Guinness) in the BBC miniseries
based on LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979). Moreover, she starred in the West
End production of Calendar Girls (2007) and appeared at the Bristol Old Vic in Juliet and
Her Romeo (2010). Phillips was married to Peter O'Toole from 1959 to 1979. Signer on
verso merits further research. Corners gently worn. Toned, especially at edges. Left edge
irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
