Annotated photo signed "Sincerely/Sid Chaplin/27/1/75" in green ink and, on verso "Hope this suits -/it's the only/spare I have./Pity it's a studio/job./Sid Chaplin".B/w, 4 ¾ x 6 ¼. Chaplin (1916-1986), born in Shildon, Durham, England, was a British novelist and short story writer. The son of a coal miner, Chaplin started working in coal mines at age 15 and continued working the mines while going to college. His story collection The Leaping Lad (1946), established him as a talented regional writer, and he became known as an observer of working-class life with his novels The Thin Seam (1950), about coal mining, and The Day of the Sardine (1961). He also wrote the novels The Watchers and the Watched (1962) and The Mines of Alabaster (1971) and the short story collections On Christmas Day in the Morning (1979) and The Bachelor Uncle (1980). Lightly toned and creased. Paperclip impression on top edge. Light ink smudges on verso. "H" of signature on verso is lightly smudged. Otherwise in fine condition.
