SID ASCHER
The famed press agent uses a newspaper handwriting expert to promote client Richard Kollmar
Typed Note signed: "Sidney Ascher", 1 page, 7x8½. New York, N.Y., 1943 July 7. On personal letterhead to "Dear Shirley Spencer". In full: "Hope you will find the enclosed handwriting specimen of interest for your column. It is Richard Kollmar's. He is the star and producer of 'Early to Bed', the new Broadway musical hit, and he is also star of 'Bright Horizon', the daily CBS radio serial. He is also the dramatic voice for many of the singing stars. Mr. Kollmar wrote 'Sing a Love Song', which was a hit a few seasons ago. He worked his way through college by leading a swing band. His great grand-father was President of the United States, (Daniel D. Tompkins, v. p. to James Monroe). Mr. Kollmar is one of the youngest producers on Broadway and the only one who writes, sings, acts, and plays the piano. Sincerely" [signature] P. S. When are you going to visit the Blue Angel?" SIDNEY ASCHER (b. 1913) was a legendary press agents to rising stars like Tony Bennett, Vic Damone and Danny Thomas. Unlike the talent agents who secure bookings for their clients, Ascher's job was to garner publicity, as he is doing here. He was famous for schmoozing with entertainment columnists, also evident from this letter. Ascher produces memorable quips, and wrote Sid Ascher's World of Trivia. Shirley Spencer was a syndicated columnist specializing in handwriting analysis, beginning in the 1930s. Richard Kollmar (1910-1971) was as Ascher describes him, and also co-host of a popular New York radio show, Dorothy and Dick, with his spouse, columnist Dorothy Kilgallen. Creased. Multiple mailing folds. Paper clip impression at top edge. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
