Sidney Breese wrote this letter in Washington, D. C. in 1848, during his second year as U. S. Senator from Illinois, to an autograph hunter.
Autograph letter signed "Sidney Breese". Pencil notations near bottom edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Washington, D. C., Dec. 13, 1844. In full: "Sir, I send you as requested my autograph. Very [illegible] Yrs. ,". A militia officer in the Black Hawk War (1932), Breese (1800-1878) was a U. S. Senator from Illinois from 1843 to 1849. He was also a U. S. District Attorney for Illinois (1827-1829), a Circuit Court Judge (1835-1841 and 1855-1857), a Justice on the Illinois State Supreme Court (1841-1843 and 1857 to his death) and a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives (1851-1852). Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Show-through from adhesive residue on verso touches body of letter but not signature. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Random ink stains. Folded once thrice and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
