Sidney Breese wrote this letter in Washington, D. C. in 1848, during
his second-to-last year as U. S. Senator from Illinois, to say that he'd be
happy to comply with a request.
Autograph letter signed "Sidney Breese". 1 page, 7¾x8¾.
Washington, D. C., Aug. 2, 1848. Addressed to Henry C. Wiley (address
pasted in bottom left corner). In full: "Dear Sir, It gives me
pleasure to comply with your request. Yrs. [illegible],".A militia
officer in the Black Hawk War (1932), Breese (1800-1878) was a U. S.
Senator from Illinois from 1843 to 1849. He was also a U. S. District
Attorney for Illinois (1827-1829), a Circuit Court Judge (1835-1841 and
1855-1857), a Justice on the Illinois State Supreme Court (1841-1843 and 1857 to
his death) and a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives
(1851-1852). Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Show-through from mounting
residue on verso touches body of letter but not signature. Folded twice
vertically and thrice horizontally. Otherwise in fine
condition.
