SIDNEY FRANCES BATEMAN
The actress and stage producer regrets that seats for a performance are sold out.
Autograph Letter signed: "S. F. Beckman", 2 pages (integral leaf), 4½x7. Lyceum Theatre [Baltimore], January 22, no year. On black-bordered mourning paper to "Dear Mr. Lewis", in full: "I am so sorry I can do nothing for you. The demand for seats for the [?] is so great that it only leaves half the bills to be sold and they are always taken the day the office is open. Regretting my inability to serve you I write many thanks for your kind wishes. Yours most sincerely". Sidney Frances Bateman (1823-1881), the daughter of English-born American actor Joseph Cowell, married actor Hezekiah Linticum Bateman. They managed the Lyceum Theatre in Baltimore for many years, and starred in the debut there of Self, one of several plays written by Sidney Bateman. She continued to manage the Lyceum after her husband's death in 1875, but left in 1878 to assume management of Sadler's Wells Theatre in England. Her daughter, Kate Josephine Bateman, a well-known stage actress on both sides of the Atlantic, performed in productions there, as did many American actors. The use of black-bordered mourning paper places this letter in the years 1875-1878, between Hezekiah Bateman's death and Sidney Bateman's departure from the Lyceum. Light foxing. Lightly worn. One horizontal fold. Minor tear at bottom right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
