SIDNEY KINGSLEY The playwright pens his name on this index card in blue felt tip Signature: “Sidney/ Kingsley” in blue felt tip, 5x3. Sidney Kingsley (1906-1995) was an American playwright who won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1934 for his play Men in White. While attending Cornell University, Kingsley began writing plays. Not long after, he joined the Group Theater, which performed his play Men in White in 1933. The play, centered on the issue of illegal abortion, was a huge hit and earned Kingsley a 1934 Pulitzer. In 1935, his play Dead End also enjoyed moderate success and, interestingly, is the origin of the Dead End Kids, a group of young actors from New York who went on to appear in the 1937 film adaptation of Kingsley's play, as well as in several other movies. Following a couple of flops, Kingsley once again achieved success in 1943 with the historical drama The Patriots. The play received Best Play accolades from the New York Drama Critics Circle. Kingsley also wrote a handful of scripts for Hollywood productions, the majority of which were based on his work. Lightly toned. Pencil notes in an unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
