His typed letter corrects a correspondent's misconceptions about an experiment.
Typed Letter signed: "Sidney W. Fox", 1p, 8½x11. Coral Gables, Florida, 1980 July 21. On University of Miami letterhead to E. Strasburger, Kew Garden Hills, N.Y. In full: "In response to yours of 16 July. Others, not I, worked on amino acids in the 'primordial soup'. However, I know their results. Purines or pyrimidines of the type that occur in DNA were not, I repeat not, found. 'Primordial soup' work, therefore, did not extend into questions of the structure of an original DNA, and your second question is irrelevant. The lesson from all this is the value of experiments. The right kind of experiments let the molecules tell us how they behave; we don't have to be limited to what we, in our preconceptions, would like to tell the molecules to do. Sincerely". Biochemist Sidney Fox (1912-1998) was Director of the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Evolution at U. of Miami for 30 years (1964-1993). Previously he had taught at Iowa State and headed the Oceanographic Institute at Florida State. He may not have worked on the "primordial soup" experiment, but he did do related research, studying how amino acids could form organic compounds which may have been forerunners of living cells. During World War II, Fox developed a way to extract Vitamin A from shark livers to improve the night vision of pilots. Fine condition.
