SIGMUND MENKES
The artist signs this handwritten letter to an author thanking him for the books and mentioning that he will take a while to read them
Autograph letter signed: "Sigmund Menkes" in blue ink. 8x10. February 4, 1969, no place. To "Dear Mr. Tenenbaum" in full: "I have received the two books you have sent me- I want to wish you success and I will make the effort to read your book- unfortunately I have difficulties in reading Yiddish fluently and it will take me some time . I am sending you a check $20.00- I presume that will cover the price of the two books- With best regards" postscript: "P.S. You will find me with this address in The Bronx telephone book." Sigmund Menkes (1896-1986) began his artistic studies in 1912 at the Industrial School in Lviv. In 1923 Menkes settled in Paris, where he became a member of the École de Paris, studying multiple mediums. In addition to painting oils on canvas, Menkes produced gouaches, watercolors, and drawings. He also created a series of sculptures, primarily during a prolonged visit to Italy with Jacques Lipchitz. In 1936 he had his first solo exhibition in New York at the Sullivan Gallery on 57th Street. Menkes received a series of important distinctions for his work, including the Carol H. Beck Medal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia, 1943), the Gold Medal of the Corcoran Gallery (Washington, D.C., 1947), the Andrew Carnegie Award of the National Academy of Design (New York, 1955), and the Alfred Jurzykowski Award (New York, 1967). Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Normal mailing folds. Ink mark in upper right corner. Original mailing envelope included. Otherwise, fine condition.
