SIGMUND ROMBERG, MAX R. WILNER and ALBERT EDWARD ANSON
Romberg and his partner, producer Max R. Wilner, sign a $186 check to English actor A. E. Anson, who endorses it.
Check signed: "S Romberg", "Max R. Wilner", 8½x3¼. New York, N. Y., 1919 December 13. Check #675, drawn on the account of Wilner-Romberg Corp. at the New Netherland Bank of New York, payable to A. E. Anson for $168.00 Endorsed on verso: "A. E. Anson". SIGMUND ROMBERG (1887-1951), who came to the U.S. in 1909, played in restaurant and café orchestras and soon had his own orchestra. He wrote the score for the musical The Whirl of the World (1914) and followed it with more than 70 operettas, including Blossom Time (1921), The Student Prince (1924), The Desert Song (1926) and The New Moon (1928). MAX R. WILNER (1881-1958), the son-in-law of famed Yiddish actor David Kessler, worked in Yiddish theatre himself before becoming a Broadway and film producer. He teamed with Romberg on Magic Melody (which was showing when this check was signed) and Pagans (1921). We was a writer and supporting actor on occasional films through 1950. English-born stage actor ALBERT EDWARD ANSON (1879-1936) toured the US with the repertory company of Beerbohm Tree in 1904, and then stayed in America, appearing almost yearly in Broadway plays, a mix of comedies and dramas including Shakespearean works of both types through 1930, but his credits do not include any works by Sigmund Romberg. Cancellation holes. Ink stamps front and verso. Corners lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
