SIGMUND SPAETH
"The Tune Detective" is shown at a piano keyboard in this 5x7 black and white photograph.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/John Buscemi/with best wishes/Sigmund Spaeth". B/w, 5x7. Musicologist Sigmund Spaeth (1885-1965) composed the alma mater for Haverford College. After graduation, he wrote music articles for the New York Times, Life and other publications. He composed scores for early talking films, beginning with Gloria Swanson's first talkie, The Trespasser (1929). Spaeth was best known for his radio programs however. His piano instruction show, Keys to Happiness (1931) received 4,000 fan letters per week. Other shows followed: The Tune Detective and Song Sleuth, which traced the folk and classical origins of popular songs, and Sigmund Spaeth's Musical Quiz (through 1947). Creased. Lightly worn. ½-inch tear at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
