SIGMUND SPAETH; ANNA SOSENKO
The "Song Sleuth" contracts to make a radio appearance for Campbell Soup
Contract signed: "Sigmund Spaeth", "Anna Sosenko", 1 page, 8½x13, with stapled rider initialed by Spaeth, "S.S.". New York City, 1947 February 10. Spaeth signs an agreement with Sosenko Productions to appear on a radio program, The Campbell Room, on February 16, advertising products for the sponsor and being paid $150. Musicologist SIGMUND SPAETH (1885-1965) composed the alma mater for Haverford College. After graduation, he wrote music articles for the New York Times, Life and other publications. He composed scores for early talking films, beginning with Gloria Swanson's first talkie, The Trespasser (1929). Spaeth was best known for his radio programs however. His piano instruction show, Keys to Happiness (1931) received 4,000 fan letters per week. Other shows followed: The Tune Detective and Song Sleuth, which traced the folk and classical origins of popular songs, and Sigmund Spaeth's Musical Quiz (through 1947). A business manager and producer in an industry dominated by men, ANNA SOSENKO (1909-2000) produced the hit radio talk show The Raleigh Room, sponsored by Raleigh cigarettes and hosted by the entertainer Hildegarde. The show's theme song, Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup, was written by Sosenko, who was also Hildegarde's manager. (The song was later made famous by Nat King Cole) Sosenko put her vast knowledge of theatre and music to work, conceiving and producing star-studded musical evenings that honored the greats of the theatre. Sosenko probably knew more of the great stars of the theatre than anyone of her era. Staple holes at top left corner. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
