Amy Irving, born on September 10, 1953, in Palo Alto, California, is an American actress known for her performances in both film and stage productions. Irving is part of a distinguished theatrical family; her father was director and producer Jules Irving, and her mother is actress Priscilla Pointer.

One of Irving's first notable roles was in Brian De Palma's horror film "Carrie" (1976), in which she played Sue Snell. Irving's breakout role came in 1980 when she starred in "The Competition," for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. In 1983, she appeared in Barbra Streisand's directorial debut, "Yentl," a role that garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Irving’s stage career has been marked by similarly strong performances. Notable among her Broadway appearances is her role in the 1980 production of "Amadeus," for which she received critical acclaim. In 1994, Irving was honored with an Obie Award for her performance in the Off-Broadway play "Broken Glass."

Aside from her work in front of the camera, Irving has shown an interest in working behind the scenes. In 2001, she directed a short film titled "X-Girlfriend," which was showcased at the Telluride Film Festival.
